Reports indicate that the third national survey on cultural relics in China has revealed more than 700 km of ancient Great Wall in the northwestern part of the country.
“We found 15 sections with a total length of 26 km of ancient walls and three beacon built in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC – AD 24) in our region recently during a national survey,” said Liang Shilin, deputy director and director of the Museum’s cultural bureau in Jinta County, Gansu province.

“This ancient walls built in the north in this area and new discoveries by archaeologists clearly the exact location and distribution of ancient wall in the north of the county,” said Liang.
The wall was built from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) as a defensive way to prevent the invasion of other countries in Chinese history.

According to Liu Yulin, an archaeologist at the Museum Jinta and his colleagues went into the desert many times to survey and find a wall in remote places without human habitation.

“As an ancient building built in mountainous areas and remote desert, the remains of the wall was well protected without being destroyed by human activity. They are only partially destroyed by floods and sand storms,” said Liu.
Archaeologists assume that the newly discovered ancient wall in Jinta county is one of the best preserved wall built in the Western Han Dynasty. In Shaanxi, some 700 km from the ancient walls built in the Qin (221-206 BC), Western Han and the Sui (AD 581-618) was found during the last year in a national survey of cultural relics.
According to Wang Weilin, deputy director of the Shaanxi provincial archaeological research institute, agency survey team with several professors from Northwest University for the survey since 2009 of about 16 districts and districts in Yan’an, Yulin, and Weinan in the province.

“We found some 200 km from the ancient walls built by the Qin kingdom and the Warring States Period some 500 km from the ancient buildings built in the Sui Dynasty in the district,” said Wang.
“Currently, a total of 1700 km of ancient walls built in the Warring States Period, Western and Han Sui Dynasty in Shaanxi province have been found, providing scientific information and details for further implementation of the ancient walls of protection and utilization,” he added.

Expanding thousands of miles from the center of the country to the northwest, the Great Wall was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1987. Military structure was built over centuries as a defense system to prevent invasion of the north.
From the fort is almost 9000 km, only with a length of 2500 km are left standing today.
